Walking through the alleyways of the old town you inevitably reach the Church of SS. Annunziata, situated a few steps away from Piazza Vecchia. The ancient little church responded to the needs of the small medieval community and like the majority of town churches has an altar that faces the East. This building was mentioned in 1393 in the papal bull of Boniface IX, in which he reported that the ‘basilian Priory of S. Maria dell’Annunziata of Ceglie was vacant for the transfer of the Abbot and that for this reason the church passed under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Sant’Angelo dei Greci.’ This meant that the church depended on the basilian priory and that the cult was celebrated with the greek rite.
