The triumphal arch of St. Stephen (Arco di Santo Stefano or Porta di Sant’Antonio) introduces you to the historic centre of Martina Franca. It was built in 1764 and leads to Piazza Roma, with its peculiar triangular form, due to the old ground plan of the Castle of the Orsini Princes of Taranto which stood here in more ancient times. Buildings of various architectural styles coexist in this square, such as the baroque Palazzo Martucci and Palazzo Miali in liberty style. And at the centre the Dolphins’ Fountain stands out, sculpted in 1934 and held to be by some historians a monument in celebration of the city’s being plumbed into the Puglian Aqueduct.
