Ceglie Messapica iso ne of thte oldest towns in the Valle d’Itria and its history is witnessed to by countless archeological remains. Among these, there are the 18 specchie (stone cumuli) found around the town which can still be visited by walking over the fields to them. They were look out points built by the Messapians putting one slab of stone upon another using the stones that were pulled from the soil. The countryside of Ceglie is also dotted with numerous caves and crypts. However the most important archeological discoveries can be seen at the Civic Archeological Museum, within which messapian amphora are exhibited with funeral decorations, inscriptions, epigraphs, and coins besides the documents and maps concerning the activities of the excavations.
