After visiting these important monuments the walk through the historic centre of Ostuni can continue wandering round the narrow streets and climbing and descending the stairways to be found there. There are fascinating corners where churches are to be found, ancient entrances, balconies, tiny squares and small stairways that inevitably lead to the city walls. Reinforced in the Aragonese era, they preserve still eight towers and two gates, the New Gate which looks to the West and the Demetrio Gate which faces east. From here a panoramic view over the plain of ancient olive trees opens up which takes your breath away. Nothing like his valley is to be seen anywhere else in the world. It is dotted with thousands of centuries old trees and for this reason it is a candidate for recognition by Unesco as a ‘world heritage site’.
